Located on the South East shores of Lake Iliamna, AK near the Cook Inlet.

The Fishing

Most of the fishing out of Alaska Rainbow Point Lodge is done on the lodge's home waters - the Upper and Lower sections of the Copper River and the Gibraltar River. With the use of the lodge's Cessna 206 float plane, we also access the rivers of Iliamna, Katmai National Park and West Cook Inlet.

During the trophy trout fishing seasons (late spring and fall) guests come to fish for trophy native rainbows but Arctic Char, Dolly Varden and Arctic Grayling can also be targeted. The Rainbow fishing can be incredible for both numbers and size so when the timing is correct you can spend your days continually bending your rod on 18-24 inch fish with the occasional, daily hog that will approach 28 inches. In August, the sockeye begin to spawn, leaving a scent in the water that ignites the voracious appetite of the rainbow trout. As the spawning continues throughout the month, more and more food is in the river. The big rainbows from Lake Illiamna stack up in area rivers, offering anglers the best chance of the year for a true trophy. As the season goes into late September and early October the true trophies of the Iliamna drainage are found. Fat rainbows, stuffing themselves for winter, clog the rivers and just won't stay off your fly. The reality of hooking into multiple 24-31inch fish is real and Rainbow Point lodge is the place to get it done.

Searching for Summer Salmon? The sockeye salmon averaging 8-12 lbs run in our drainage and is the world's largest run of any salmon--typically 8-10 million (yes, million) fish. The hardest fighting of all Pacific salmon, if sockeyes grew any larger they'd be nearly impossible to land. Silvers averaging 10-14 lbs, Pinks from 4-7 lbs and Chums from 10-16 lbs can also be caught during this time.

There are many incredible fly out rivers that will satisfy your trout and salmon fix along with providing scenic flights and views of the Iliamna/Katmai area. Although it is difficult to leave the home waters of AKRPL it is a must to at least have a few days in the air to experience this incredible area. You will see plenty of wildlife, vistas and have the opportunity to fish to any species that you choose.
