Fly into the village of Iliamna, Alaska near the Cook Inlet where our pilot will meet you for a floatplane flight to your camp.

The Fishing

You will have 6 different rivers to choose from to float:

  • Alagnak River
  • River X
  • Chili River
  • Kokatuli River
  • Moraine River
  • Mulchatna River

Some of the rivers have class III to IV rapids while others are nothing but riffles and long runs. The average drift length is 30-40 miles although longer and shorter drifts may be arranged.

In June and July you will be casting 5-8 weight rods for rainbows. The fishing will be what you would expect in western rivers of the lower 48 except the fish are larger. Dry flies will consist of caddis, stimulators and midges. Smolt patterns, leaches, stones and midge larva are fished regularly.

In August and September you'll transition over to fishing egg patterns, leaches and flesh flies. Bring your dry flies too. You never know when you'll need them. For chasing salmon, you will need an 8-10 weight rod. You'll fish a lot of string leaches, spun marabou flies and anything else that is big, heavy and ugly! The only exception is with sockeye salmon. Sockeye like sparsely tied flies.

The River X and Moraine rivers have been designated fly fishing only rivers. The others are restricted to single hook barbless artificials only. The time of the year will depict the style of fishing.
