PANAMA - PBGFC

Location

The Lodge is in the Gulf of Chiriqui, on Isla Boca Brava. It's located off the Pacific Coast, facing south, near the Costa Rica border, in northern Panama. The lodge is a one hour boat ride from David, the country's second-largest city.

The Fishing

The fishing options in this region are seemingly endless and depending on current conditions and the species targeted, productive inshore fishing is less than 15 minutes from the lodge and blue-water action, less than an hour's steam from the dock. Many of the guests who come to the Panama Big Game Fishing Club tend to ignore the inshore fishing in order to concentrate on the bounty of billfish and giant yellowfin tuna that prowl the waters surrounding the Isla Coiba area, including Isla Montousa, Isla Ladrones and Hannibal Bank a bit farther offshore. While grander blue and black marlin do reside in these waters, a typical sized fish will range from 250 to 500 pounds, making them manageable on 50 pound tackle. At the PBGFC, more black marlin will show up in the spread than blues; with the average ratio being four blacks to every blue. The fishing options in this region are seemingly endless and depending on current conditions and the species targeted, productive inshore fishing is less than 15 minutes from the lodge and blue-water action, less than an hour's steam from the dock.

Sailfish arrive in fabulous number off Panama as well, with most fish in the 80 to 120 pound range. Add the possibility of landing a giant yellowfin tuna, dorado or wahoo and you have a world-class offshore smorgasbord. One of the great aspects to fishing this location is that if the winds are strong and keep you inshore, you can chase roosterfish, amberjack and big cubera snapper all day. It's comforting to know that such an untapped and productive fishery is waiting as a back up plan on the offhand chance that the winds are too strong offshore.

This is a spectacular location to target the big blue water species with a fly rod. The boats and crew are familiar with fly fishing in blue water, however, unlike the conventional big game fishing where the lodge supplies all the top of the line gear needed, there is no fly fishing gear available at PBGFC and guests will have to bring all their own fly rods and gear for their trip.

Accommodations

The lodge consists of a central clubhouse/bar/dining-lounge area and four large cabins, all perched atop a coastal promontory. Each cottage is 600 square feet, has air-conditioning, and can sleep up to six. The roomy, cheerful lounge has an attractive teak bar, and a record swordfish hangs from the ceiling. Sitting at the bar after a day on the water at PBGFC is one of life's true pleasures. The lodge is owned and operated by a Bill Beck and Lee Campbell, who are both former charter-boat Captains and famous Miami restaurateurs. They pride themselves on running a lodge with a remote jungle atmosphere, but all the amenities. The lodge is optimal for small groups of anglers who are interested in staying in a lodge setting while enjoying the benefits of exclusivity. With parties of 8-12 anglers we can usually book out the entire facility for the duration of the groups stay.

Getting There

Guests will fly into Panama City and overnight in the city. If a flight can be booked that arrives in Panama City before 1:30 pm, it is possible to reach the lodge on your arrival day. Guests will be met at the airport, escorted to the hotel, and are taken early the next day to Albrook Domestic Airport, where you will take a 1 hour flight up to David, Panama's second largest city. Upon arriving in David, guests will then be met by a representative of the lodge where you will then be transferred to the Port of Pedregal, which is about a 15 minute taxi ride. From the port, it is a 1 hour ride in the lodge water taxi (beer, soda, diet soda and bottled water on board) down a scenic inland waterway to Panama Big Game Fishing Club. If the flight is early enough, a partial day of fishing can begin around 2 pm that day.
