Situated about 30 miles off the coast of Belize City, Turneffe Flats has long been recognized as a premier saltwater fly fishing and marine ecotourism destination. It's located on Belize's Turneffe Atoll, the largest and most biologically diverse atoll in the Caribbean.

The Fishing

Turneffe Atoll has long been recognized as one the finest flats fishing destinations found anywhere! It's blessed with a vast network of wadeable bonefish flats that seemingly go on forever. The Turneffe Atoll is the largest of the four coral atolls found in the Western Hemisphere and Turneffe Flats Lodge is beautifully situated in the midst of countless productive flats, the majority of which are only 5 to 20 minutes away. The expansive lush flats found out at Turneffe are full of crabs, shrimp and other bonefish foods. This translates into incredible numbers of bonefish, both in large and small schools, as well as singles and doubles. Wading these picturesque flats while sight casting to tailing and cruising bonefish is an absolute joy. The hard packed coral flats are relatively easy to wade, and anglers of all ages can handle the terrain.

Bonefishing is a mainstay of the fishing at Turneffe Flats Lodge, with miles of crystal clear, wadeable flats. Anglers can either wade or fish from the boat, depending on preference as well as what the situation dictates. Permit are found throughout the year in abundance out at Turneffe, usually in the cuts and channels and on the edges of the coral flats. The fish range between 8 and 20 pounds, although larger fish are caught with a fair degree of regularity. Even though there are times when permit are found in very shallow water, most often anglers targeting permit will encounter them in 6 to 10 feet of water.

The tarpon fishing can be excellent during the spring and summer months. Most of our migratory tarpon are in the 70-90 pound range, but we see a few 150-200 pound monsters each year. As a result, if you're serious about chasing a "Slam", there are few better places anywhere on earth that Turneffe in the spring and summer. The skinny water fishing is that good and it's supported by a guide base that is first rate. Turneffe Flats Lodge offers a wonderful environment and delivers a first class angling experience.
